When I worked in corporate recruiting, I had to set expectations with hiring managers who also wanted to make hires in an instant.Not so fast, I told them. First, the job posting got approved and posted, and resumes were submitted. Next, I reviewed all of them, conducted phone screens, provided feedback, scheduled office interviews, gathered feedback, conducted the next round of interviews and you guessed it gathered more feedback. Perhaps at this time, I got hiring approvals and the confirmed compensation package, sent the offer letter, allowed the candidate to give two weeks notice a nd ran a background check. Well, the earliest we could make a new hire was eight weeks in a perfect world.Thats why a preconceived mindset of when you think youll land a job isnt helpful. Too many things are out of your control and expecting immediate feedback and instant next steps will distract you from your endeavors.5. And now ditch them. Consider this Would you really want to expedite the process to work for a less-than-stellar employer within three months instead of that amazing employer within five months? Two months is not that significant, so as you toss expectations of a swift process away, you will only be delighted if the process is faster than you anticipated.Moreover, youll be pretty excited when focusing more on the quality of the role youre pursuing, positive interview experience and people you met rather than the fact that they called you back within seven business days instead of two.6. Be patient. If youve ever purchased a house, chances are you didnt find the ri ght one overnight. After defining your criteria, scouring open houses and pounding the pavement, dealing with financials, your mortgage, down payment and contracts not to mention the closing and physical act of moving in that process took significant time and effort as well. It was time and effort well spent when looking at the outcome.At the end of the day, things in life worth having, such as your next job, dont materialize overnight. When it comes to your job search and finding a better opportunity, forget the instant gratification world we live in, and if employers do get back to you rather quickly, remember its a marathon, not a sprint. There are several steps along the way that will all be worth your efforts.

I include King George at the expense of Ben Franklin. I dramatize Angelica Schuylers intelligence and heart at the expense of Benedict Arnolds betrayal. James Madison and Hamilton were friends and political allies, but their personal and political fallout occurs right on our act break, during intermission. My goal is to give you as much as an evening of musical entertainment can provide, and have you on your way home slightly before Les Mis lets out next door.This act of choosing- the stories we tell versus the stories we leave out- will reverberate across the rest of your life. Dont believe me? Think about how you celebrated this Senior Week, and contrast that with the version you shared with the parents and grandparents sitting behind you.Penn, dont front. I know what you did this summerIm going to tell you a story from my twenties today- a story Ive never told in public before. Ill tell you two stories actually. Its my hope that itll be of use to you as you stare down the quarter life marker.I am 20 years old, finishing my sophomore year at Wesleyan, and my girlfriend of four and a half years is home from her semester abroad. I cannot wait to see her again- she is my first love. I dread seeing her again- Ive grown into my life without her. In her absence, with time and angst to spare, I have developed the first draft of my first full-length musical, an 80-minute one-act called In the Heights. I have also developed a blinding pain in my right shoulder, which I cant seem to stop cracking. My girlfriend comes home. I am so happy to see her, even as my shoulder worsens. My mother takes me to a back specialist, ranked in New York magazine, so you know hes good.He examines me, looks me dead in the eyes, and says, Theres nothing wrong with your back. He looks at me for a long time, as Im crying, and get this- youll ap preciate this, Rene- he tells me the story of Giuseppe Verdi. A 19th century Italian composer of some note, who, in the space of a few short years, lost his wife and two young children to disease. He tells me that Verdis greatest works- Rigoletto, La Traviata- came not before, but after this season of Job, the darkest moments of his life. He looks me in the eyes and tells me, Youre trying to avoid going through pain, or causing pain. Im here to tell you that youll have to survive it if you want to be any kind of artist.I break up with my girlfriend that night.I spend the summer in therapy. I tell a lot of stories Ive never told before.My father asks my mother, What the hell kind of back doctorVerdi? Really?I stop cracking my shoulder.The story I had been telling myself- happy guy in a long-distance relationship with his high school sweetheart- was being physically rejected by my body via my shoulder. Id never broken up with anyone before- in my head, I was a good guy, and good guys dont break up with their significant others when one of them goes off to study abroad. I was trying to fit my life into a romantic narrative that was increasingly at odds with how I really felt. In retrospect, we both were.What about her story? Well, its not mine to tell, but I can share this much she began dating one of her good friends the following year of college. Fast-forward to present day She is happily married to that same good friend, with two beautiful kids. In her story, I am not the angsty, shoulder-cracking tortured artist. Im the obstacle in the way of the real love story. For you Office fans Theyre Jim and Pam, and Im Roy.Story 2 I am out of college, I am 23 years old, and Tommy Kail and I are meeting with a veteran theater producer. To pay rent I am a professional substitute teacher at my old high school. Tommy is Audra McDonalds assistant. Tommy is directing In the Heights, and with his genius brain in my corner, my 80-minute one-act is now two acts. This big deal t heater producer has seen a reading we put on in the basement of The Drama Book Shop in mid-Manhattan, and he is giving us his thoughts. We hang on his every word, this is a big deal theater producer, and we are kids, desperate to get our show on. We are discussing the character of Nina Rosario, home from her first year at Stanford, the first in her family to go to college.The big deal theater producer saysNow I know in your version Ninas coming home with a secret from her parents shes lost her scholarship. The song is great, the actress is great. What Im bumping up against, fellas, is that this doesnt feel high stakes enough. Scholarship? Big deal. What if shes pregnant? What if her boyfriend at school hit her? What if she got caught with drugs? It doesnt have to be any of those things, youre the writer- but do you see what Im getting at guys, a way to ramp up the stakes of your story?I resist the urge to crack my shoulder.We get through the meeting and Tommy and I, again alone, loo k at each other. He knows what Im going to say before I say it.Pregnant- I know.Nina on drugs- I was there.But he wants to put our show up.Tommy looks at me.Thats not the story you want to tell and thats not the show I want to direct. There are ways to raise the stakes that are not that. Well just keep working.If I could get in a time machine and watch any point in my life, it would be this moment. The moment where Tommy Kail looked at uncertain, frazzled me, desperate for a production and a life in this business, tempted, and said no for us. I keep subbing, he continues working for Audra, we keep working on In the Heights for five years until we find the right producers in Jill Furman and Kevin McCollum and Jeffrey Seller. Until Philly native Quiara Hudes becomes my co-writer and reframes our show around a community instead of a love triangle. Until Alex Lacamoire and Bill Sherman take my songs and made them come to life through their orchestrations. It will be another five years before Heights reaches Broadway, exactly as we intended it.And then the good part Ninas story that we fought to tell, keeps coming back around in my life. It comes around in letters, or in the countless young men and women who find me on the subway or on college campuses and take my hand and say, You dont understand. I was the first in my family to go to college, when I felt out of place like I was drowning I listened to Breathe, Ninas song, and it got me through. And I think to myself as these strangers tell me their Nina stories, I do understand. And that sounds pretty high stakes to me.I know that many of you made miracles happen to get to this day. I know that parents and grandparents and aunts and uncles and family behind you made miracles happen to be here. I know because my family made miracles happen for me to be standing here talking to you, telling stories.Your stories are essential. 7 Ways To Ask For The Job At Interviews End 7 Ways To Ask For The Job At Interviews End What to do at the  end of an interview?  Everyone tells you to ask for the job, but how does one ask for a job? Many job seekers take a passive approach: they don’t ask for the job. The passive approach does not work  well and is often interpreted in a lack of interest in the job. Interviewers and hiring managers assume that if a candidate doesn’t ask for the job, they just aren’t interested. From the candidates point of view, asking for the job may make  many uncomfortable, and it opens them up for rejection â€" this is especially common among candidates who have had long term frustrations with job search. Others feel that asking for the job is, “too pushy”. I give this general career advice to all candidates: Take a risk and ask because you miss 100% of the shots you never take. So far, this isn’t earth shattering news. Today, well go  over some strategies that work and contrast them with a few that don’t. In addition, I’ll help you translate the interviewer’s response to better understand if you’ll move forward in the hiring process. 7 ways to ask for the job at interview’s end: Common Approaches 1.  Direct Approach:  â€œI’d really like to work for your company â€" the job sounds perfect for me” While the most popular approach, this method is riddled with problems. It’s centered around what the candidate wants, not what the company wants. If delivered with the wrong tone, in the wrong situation, or to the wrong person, it can be perceived as desperate or pushy. This approach doesn’t ask the interviewer for their opinion of the candidate, which could even appear insulting. Where this can work â€" for a high pressure, transactional sales position, this demonstrates an ability to go for the close. At an employer that values relationships and taking the time to build trust, this approach can ruin an otherwise great interview. 2.  Feedback Approach:  â€œSo how did I do?” This approach asks the interviewer for feedback, and puts the interviewer on the spot. If you are one of the leading candidates, and the interviewer definitely has you on the callback list, you’ll probably get a strong answer. The problem with this approach is if you are on the bubble for callback, you’ll rarely have an interviewer tell you this (interviewers don’t want confrontation, or to make a discussion uncomfortable â€" plus they probably have to move on to the next candidate). If you’re on the bubble, you’ll probably get a non answer telling you that they will review all candidates and make callbacks in the next week or two â€" basically “Don’t call us, we’ll call you”. Closing Approaches 3.  Next Steps Approach:  â€œWhat’s our next step?” While a favorite among salespeople, this approach can have drawbacks also. This approach uses a technique common in the sales world, assuming there’s a next step and that the interview process will move forward. If you’re a leading candidate, you’ll likely get the response you want, otherwise you’re likely to hear that the company is still reviewing candidates and …. “Its  not you, its us”. 4.  Objections Approach:  â€œDo you have any remaining concerns about how well I could do the job?” This is another approach that might work more effectively for a sales position than for others. For a transactional sales position, it demonstrates closing techniques. For non-sales positions, you risk that you haven’t asked the right question. The interviewer may answer “no”, which can still leave the candidate in confusion â€" The interviewer may have decided that you are not a good fit, so they have no remaining concerns … the interviewer’s decision has already been made. Leveraged Feedback Approach (What you should be doing!) 5.  Ranking Approach:  â€œIn comparison to other candidates for this position, how do I rank?” This is a higher level approach, which can give the candidate insight as to chances of getting the job. Higher quality feedback is one of the advantages to this approach. You open the interviewer to give some great feedback, allowing a comparison of how strong of a fit the interviewer perceives vs your own perception of how the interview went. If the response that doesn’t translate into “you’re one of the top candidates” … move to the next opportunity, because this one’s not happening. 6.  Fit Approach:  â€œHow do you see me fitting in with your company?” This approach can uncover unmentioned objections in an interview and can give feedback to understand how well you “read” the interview (do your perceptions of fit match the interviewer’s perceptions). This can be effective especially when a key criteria is sensitivity to others. If the response isn’t excited and glowing, if the word “fine” or something similar is used, or if the interviewer is waiting to review all the candidates, you aren’t a top choice. Again, move on and don’t wait by the phone. 7.  1 to 10 Approach:  â€œOn a 1 to 10 scale (10 being best), how do you think I’d do in the position?” For most situations, I like this approach best, other than for highly transactional sales positions. This approach treats your desire to get feedback as an employee review, showing that you truly seek constructive criticism. It’s also a process that HR personnel, recruiters, and hiring managers are very familiar with, increasing your chances of getting an honest response. To get additional feedback, you can ask a secondary question “What could I do to make that a 10?” This approach gives you a very clear idea of where you stand and your best shot at understanding any objections in the interviewer’s mind â€" maybe even a chance to clear up any misunderstandings. In his case, maintenance” was a glorified term for janitor- his job was to empty trash cans and clean the restrooms and portable toilets at all of the Cape Cod National Seashore beaches. While this summer job may seem awful to some, it had enough positive aspects that he went back to it several years in a row. The benefits to any summer job you get in your teens or in college can be unforeseen when you start out, yet what you learn on the job can stay with you for the rest of your life. Here are some benefits to working in jobs that may not turn into careers, but can provide valuable experience and extra cash during your summers away from school. Get exposure to different ways of life The National Park Service maintenance crews always worked in teams of two or three people. The time they spent in the truck together going from site to site was time to talk about anything they wanted. Even at the age of 18, my ex-boyfriend knew he wanted to be a writer. He was fascinated by people and their stories, and has since published a novel.  The men he worked with were Cape Cod natives, and much older than him, so it was the perfect opportunity for him to learn about their experiences and perspective on life, which was much different than that of his upper-middle class family. Essentially, he was collecting material, which allowed him to overlook the griminess of cleaning toilets. Any job that entails driving around a lot, either with other people in the car or to their homes, can expose you to different types of people and broaden your perspective, showing you that we are all more alike than we are different. Jobs like Uber driver, baby sitter, delivery driver, can be choi ces that get you out of your comfort zone and provide the opportunity to hear interesting personal stories. Learn what you don’t want For me, the biggest lesson from working in a restaurant was learning that I didn’t want to work in the restaurant business. The daily grind of food prep, taking orders, making sandwiches, scooping ice cream, and cleaning up felt like a treadmill. It certainly wasn’t why I was going to college. I also learned that I didn’t like a public-facing role: I disliked taking customer orders and running the cash register, but I didn’t mind standing at the sandwich-making station all day. I also tried my hand at waitressing, which was more of disaster for me than running a cash register. When I was ready to look for jobs after college, I already knew that I would rather work behind the scenes than in front of people. Knowing what you don’t want is valuable information in the path to finding what you do want. Make lifelong friends My neighbor Ben worked in the photo department at Sam’s Club when he was in college. It doesn’t relate much to his job in software sales now, but he told me that he met two of his best friends there. Ten years later, he still counts these men among his best buddies. I can attest to the same experience from my summer jobs- I met my first boyfriend at my high school summer job at an amusement park, and some lifelong friends at those restaurant jobs. Understand group dynamics Being a multigenerational and/or multicultural work situation can provide lessons about group dynamics that will carry forward into the rest of your career. My friend Chris Pielher, @TheChrisPiehler,  now a writer and comedian, taught horseback riding at a summer camp while in high school, and said, I was the only boy on a staff of 8-10, so it was great experience in seeing the dynamic among a group of women. It also made me comfortable around women.” That’s a pretty valuable skill for a teenage boy. For me, the group dynamics of the restaurant business taught me that everyone working together in what they are most suited to do is what makes an operation run smoothly. That’s not much different than the corporate world, where teams can consist of engineers, account managers, marketers, operations staff, and finance staff who work together to produce a product that clients want to buy. Learn patience If your summer job entails working with children, animals, handicapped people, or the elderly, you will most certainly learn patience. Chris said of being a horseback riding instructor, Working with the kids taught me that kids who seem scared can build confidence quickly with the right instruction and the right pony. Handling horses requires you to be quiet, calm and clear in what you want from them.” Being patient with people and animals gives you a heartfelt sense of confidence in the effectiveness of your work. On Monday, researchers released a list of the best and worst states for military veterans to retire.Florida is the best state for military retireesLooking at economic environment, quality of life and healthcare, researchers  scored all 50 states and the District of Columbia on data  that included the state taxes on military pensions, the quality of VA hospitals, and the share of homeless veterans.What they found was that Florida ranked as the best state for a comfortable military retirement. Montana and New Hampshire ranked second and third.The Sunshine State  had the fifth-highest number of Veterans Affairs health facilities per veteran, which was one of the most weighted factors. But what really helped Florida beat out the rest of the competition was its tax friendliness, which allows veterans to keep more of their incomes and pensions.“Florida has no personal income tax and doesn’t tax military pension whatsoever, so that’s obviously a huge benefit to any type  of retiree, but certainly a military retiree. I think that’s why Florida is known as a retirement  state,” WalletHub’s Jill Gonzalez told Ladders. It makes sense then as to why Florida has the third-largest veteran  population in the nation.D.C. is the worst area for military retireesD.C., meanwhile, ranked as the worst area for military veterans to retire. According to WalletHub’s data, D.C. “has a very high cost of living, as most places around the Northeast do, and is not as friendly towards taxpayers,” Gonzalez said. D.C. also had a lower quality of VA hospitals compared to other areas.Out of all the regions, D.C. also had the fewest job opportunities for  veterans. Since the average officer is 45 years old upon retirement from service, many are looking to start their ne xt careers and are not ready to live on their pension. If finding a job is the most important factor to you as a military veteran, move to Indiana. Indiana had the highest availability of jobs for veterans.

It can be, but just like any other job it has compelling moments as well as those that are stressful, laborious and difficult. I’ve been a writer for nearly 15 years, and this is my insider’s view of this quietly uproarious occupation. These days I get the chance to write interesting articles, but I have also written my share of pretty dry reports, instruction manuals, letters and brochures. Scoring compelling assignments is often a writer’s  payoff after honing his or her craft by practicing on much less engaging pieces.   Over the years, though, I’ve learned that this job brings out the best in my abilities no matter what the project. For example, I’m not naturally skilled in math, but if I have to generate a financial report, and I need to include facts, figures or statistical data, I can conjure up my most detail-oriented self.   I love to write, and I’m glad I get to do it professionally. My favorite thing about it is that no matter what the topic-even if it may seem dull or difficult when I start the project-the fact that I get to write about it makes the subject interesting. I get to be alone with a topic I might not think about otherwise. I have the opportunity to learn about it, find an interesting angle on it and then articulate a position on it. It’s a fascinating way to explore the world.   If you are thinking of cultivating a career as a writer, here are a couple of tips to contemplate: Talent alone won’t make you successful Don’t overvalue your talent. It can’t stand alone. This sounds brutal. I know. But talented writers are everywhere. A writer’s job is to deliver ideas to an audience in a concise and engaging way. To accomplish this, you have to communicate clearly. Learn the craft. Know how the tools work. Study and practice as much as you can. I don’t know a single editor who has the time or patience to chisel meaning out of undisciplined prose. Trust me. They hate that. Do your homework Become a student of the written word. Seek out your favorite thinkers and writers. Read everything you can. Take literature, philosophy, writing and grammar classes. Be humble and work hard.   Get a variety writing jobs Find jobs that give you the chance to practice, even if you don’t love the subject matter. It benefits you to try doing different types of projects and assuming a variety of voices. Nothing makes you a better writer than practice. It doesn’t matter what you are writing about, only that you are building up your thinking, reading, writing and editing muscles.   Network Cultivating relationships with others in the field will yield opportunities in an extremely competitive arena. Getting an introduction from a contact can set you apart from the competition. Just remember, networks are Karma-fueled, so make sure to repay your network. Grow a thick skin Sometimes editors will love what you write; other times, it just won’t be what they want. Get used to taking negative feedback about your work. Don’t take it personally. When you are writing professionally, you have to love your work enough to be engaged. Several puzzled readers justifiably asked me why I hadn’t invested in a Kindle.In every other aspect of my life, I’m a technophile, the prototypical early adopter. I have an iPad with a Kindle app on it, but I still prefer my books in print.For me, this isn’t just a matter of nostalgia or personal taste (though that’s certainly part of it). There are at least three reasons why old-fashioned print books trump their digital counterparts.1. RetentionAbout a year ago, I noticed that I suffered amnesia after reading e-books. The content of an e-book- unlike a print book- would leave my mind as quickly as it entered. This initially struck me as counterintuitive: After all, the content of e-books and print books is exactly the same.But the experience, it later occurred to me, is very different. Every book looks the same on an e-reader. It’s the same white background and the same font size and color. It’s like staying at the Westin- the rooms are the same whether you’re in Cabo or Kansas City. E-books, like cookie-cutter hotel rooms, start blending into each other.When I sit down with a print book, I sink into a different kind of experience. Print books all look and feel different. The tactile differences help my mind separate one book from the other. I have a better sense of progress. I can make connections that I otherwise miss.Each physical book also comes with its own story- the story of the bookstore where I bought the book, the story of the wine stain on page 33, and the story of the notes I scribbled on the margins while carrying on an imaginary conversation. These stories add a melody to the words, engaging senses that otherwise remain dormant while reading an ebook.Research supports these intuitions. One study of tenth graders  found  that “students who read texts in print scored significantly better on the reading comp rehension test than students who read the texts digitally.”This difference might also be related to our online reading habits. In the digital world, we don’t read like we used to. We drag our vision across the page. We scroll and skim. I’ve noticed that these disjointed online reading habits carry over to all digital devices, including the books I read on Kindle. As a result, my attention fractures.2. RepetitionOnce I’ve read a book on Kindle, it’s off my Kindle. It disappears into the ether. But my physical books go back on the bookshelf where they stare at me for years. Passing by them, I’m reminded of the lessons learned. Some beckon to me for a second reading.For a long time, I refused to re-read books- I viewed it as a waste of time. After all, I read it once and got what I could out of it. There are too many good books to read, and too little time.Except I’m not the same person I was a decade ago. I’ve changed- more than I think I have. Every time I return to a book, it’s a new person reading it. I pick up on subtleties that I missed the first time around. New ideas become relevant because of where I’m in life now.All great books, as Derek Thompson writes, “seem to immerse me in another life, but ultimately they immerse me in me; I am looking through the window into another person’s home, but it is my face that I see in the reflection.” Just as the face that appears in that reflection changes over time, so does what you get from reading the book.This is particularly true for books we read at a young age- books that were thrust into our hands by authority figures back when we were busy staging teenage rebellions. I suggest beginning there and re-reading some of the books that you were forced to read in high school. You’ll discover a very different book than the one you remember.For example, I recently re-read  Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, which I had first read in high school. I remembered the book to be about a dystopian s ociety where a totalitarian government burns books. Except that it’s not. There’s another story line where the real culprit isn’t the government. In the book, it’s the tribesâ€"the dog-lovers, the cat-lovers, the leftists, the rightists, the Catholics, the Zen Buddhistsâ€"who pour the kerosene, light the fuse, and push their government to do the same. The book is a cautionary tale for today’s society where dissent is policed by our tribes and unorthodox views are rejected as controversial.In  a podcast interview, the author Dan Pink recounts a similar experience in college when his professor assigned the class to read  The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. When students protested that they already read this book in high school, the professor replied: “You may have read the book in high school, but  you  have not read the book.”3. RelaxationFor me, picking up a physical book erects a psychological separation from the digital world. Reading a book on an e-reader makes it a ll too tempting to be swayed by distractions screaming their 100 decibel sirens for attention.E-books, particularly when I read them at night, act as a force amplifier and send my brain into overdrive, just when it should be shutting down.Print books are my refuge.
